one clear moment
when the light comes tearing
around the mountain,
all the birds fall from the sky
the squirrels run red into their nests
that one clear moment,
when the music stops,
when the feeling stops,
when the motion stops,
that one clear moment,
once lucid and pink
now comes blue and ashen
dusted with newspaper headlines
that one clear moment,
when all that was good,
goes incredibly well,
or horribly wrong
that one clear moment,
where the blood flow
turns to blood stop,
blueness fades black
that one clear moment,
when we realize
there will be
no more
clear moments
things are truly different
the refrigerator trembles
under the weight of faces
my notebook clamors
with variety of places
our table winces
with our daily messes
the floor skreaks
as it stands the paces
the sink screams
for help with dirty trays
but the mighty red rose
on the countertop
thinks back to days
we knew none of this
"Employee of the Month"
he tells one of our drunkest,
and best, customers.
I shrug off the compliment
saying that he says that to all
of the employees,
but even he agrees with my boss.
I am considerably honored
as I haven't had any compliments
lately and anything sounds good.
"any port in a storm" as they say.
I quickly wander off
to gather my trophies,
a can of Ajax,
a mop,
and a key
to the Men's Bathroom
as the moon looks on.
